What Does The Bible Say About Abortion?

What does the bible say about abortion?  The Bible does not mention the word abortion, however, it does state Thou shalt not kill.  Therefore all that is left to do is prove that the bible considers an unborn child to be a life.  I will do this by examining some bible verses about abortion below.  Feel free to check out this video on the topic as well.

Bible Verses About Abortion

Here I will show some examples of bible verses about abortion.  Of course none of the bible verses will state the word abortion since they did not use that word in biblical times.  Many of the verses will show that the bible equates an unborn child as a life… and of course it is against the 10 commandments to take a life.

Bible Verse - Job 3:3

bible verses about abortion job 3:3

Job 3:3
“Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.”

Job is feeling depressed and mourns the day of his conception.  He is equating the day of his conception with the day of his birth.

Obviously Jobs Mother did not conceive a lump of tissues or cells but an actual Human being… A Man in fact.

Bible Verse - Jeremiah 1:5

bible verses about abortion jeremiah 1:5

Jeremiah 1:5
“Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.”

In his passage we learn that god considers someone a being long before conception.  God is telling us that he knew Jeremiah and even planned his life path before he was even conceived.

This is evidence that we have a soul that is an entity even before we take our human form.

Bible Verse - Isaiah 49:1

bible verses about abortion isaiah 49:1

Isaiah 49:1
“The Lord hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.”

Since the Lord called him “from the womb” one can deduct that god considers a human life to already exist in the womb.

Additionally some people believe that God was referring to his “servant” Jesus Christ which was before his inception.

Bible Verse - Luke 1:42

bible verses about abortion luke 1:42

Luke 1:42
“And She spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.”

The bible says “Blessed is the fruit of thy womb” and that is a clear indication that God holds dear his unborn creation.

Earlier in Luke 1:30-31  “And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: For thou hast found favour with God.  And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”

Here is another example of God already having planned  out a beings whole existence from before conception.

To a Christian believer, this is proof enough.  For those of us who need a little more scientific evidence, just look at DNA.  The whole being is already plotted out even before conception.  It will grow to the exact specifications of the DNA blueprint that has been predetermined.

Bible Verse - Exodus 21:22-25

bible verses about abortion exodus 21:22

Exodus 21:22
“If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman’s husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine.”

bible verses about abortion exodus 21:23

Exodus 21:23-25
“And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, would for wound, stripe for stripe.”

These passages prove most conclusively that  the taking of an unborn child is a sin punishable by death!

In Exodus 21:22 The phrase “So that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow” Clearly means that if some form of trauma causes the child to be born prematurely but no other harm comes, such as death of the child or the mother due to the premature birth, then it will be up to the father/husband and the courts to determine a fair punishment.

“And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, eye for eye…”  Clearly means that if However, the child does not survive the premature birth or the child or mother endure any damage  or deformity, the attacker shall pay with limb for limb.  For example if the child loses an arm in the process, the assailant will be punished by chopping off his arm.  If the child does not survive, the attacker shall be put to death.

Some pro-choice activists would have you believe that Exodus 21:22 means the mother had a miscarriage and therefore the second part of the passage only refers to injury of the mother.  This could not be more false.

Abortion in the Bible

abortion in the bible

So in conclusion what the bible says about abortion is that it is a sin.  Although it does not say the word abortion in the bible specifically, we can definitively say that the bible is pro-life.

The 10 commandments tells us that it is a sin to kill a living being.

We have now studied several bible verses that  show us that God thinks of an unborn baby as his creation, a blessing and most importantly, a living being.

The bible considers life to begin at conception or even before.  It speaks of an unborn child as equal to a living being.

I don’t think anyone would contest that if Jesus were here today, he would be pro-life.

Of course non of this makes any difference to an atheist who is pro-choice.  These findings are simply for educational purposes and for someone who is genuinely interested in the Christian perspective.
