Should We Have Open Borders Or Closed Borders?

Michael J Kelly's Opinion on Illegal Immigration Reform

I am all for legal immigration not illegal immigration.  There is a right way for the right people to get into the United States.  It involves applying for a visa, being qualified to be a productive member of society and being screened for diseases and criminal background checks.

We need to plug the hole before we can bail out the boat.  This means sealing our porous border.  After we reinforce our borders, we need to humanely care for and return those who illegally crossed. If we do not do this, it will send a clear message to others that it is ok to keep coming.  As a result, the United States will be flooded with hundreds of thousands more illegal immigrants that are just waiting to see how we handle this mess.

What is Illegal Immigration?

What is illegal immigration?  Illegal immigration is the term used when a person or persons migrate to a country that they are not citizens of in a way that violates that countries immigration laws or overstays their legal right to be there.

It is usually occurs in one of two ways. Either the person illegally crosses the border by sneaking in through unprotected open land and water or by entering legally and overstaying their temporary visa.

The Department of Homeland Security says that 27-57 percent of illegal aliens that reside in the United States have expired Visas. It’s hard to get an exact number of Illegal aliens because so many of them arrived without documentation.

At least the ones who overstayed their visas were vetted correctly at one time. In my opinion that makes them less of a criminal threat. Although some would argue that merely overstaying their welcome is breaking the law thus making them criminals. That is technically true and they are still a huge burden on our economy.

Regardless of the stated percentage range of migrants who have overstayed their visas, it is clear that the amount of aliens who entered the country illegally rather than with a permit is much higher with Mexicans simply because of the ease of access to the border.

People traveling here from overseas are forced to apply for a visa and go through the proper channels because they must go through customs at the airport. The only exception is a small percentage of human sex slaves who get smuggled inside shipping containers from China. Even then, many more people are victims of human traffickers from Mexico.

The percentage of illegals who sneak across the border and commit crimes is much higher than the ones who initially got in legally. They did not go through the background checks imposed on legal visitors. Obviously, if they are willing to break one law, they are probably more likely to break other laws since they don’t respect rules.

What is Immigration Reform?

What is immigration reform?  Immigration reform is a term used to describe the act of amending or altering the current immigration laws of a country with the goal of either improving the ease of entry or the economic health of the nation.

Immigration reform is a term used to describe the act of amending or altering the current immigration laws of a country with the goal of either improving the ease of entry or the economic health of the nation.

Both sides talk about immigration reform but the left wants to make it easier for more people to enter the country legally and the right wants to make it harder for people to circumvent the current rules of entry.

Why Do We Have Immigration Laws?

Why do we have immigration laws?  We have immigration laws to protect US citizens from dangerous diseases, the mentally insane, criminals, gangs, drugs, terrorists, and human traffickers. Immigration laws also help to protect our economy.

For approximately the first century of the United States, we had open borders. However, we always had Naturalization laws that afforded natural born citizens more rights than migrants.

The first immigration laws were installed to protect citizens from infectious diseases, criminals including rapists, murderers, and pedophiles as well as people with mental disorders. As time went by the government realized how much money it was losing to undocumented workers not paying their fair share of taxes. As the population of the US grew, it became crucial to the health of the economy to limit the number of people migrating into the country.

There is strict criteria that have to be met in order to gain entry into the country. This ensures that only healthy and productive individuals can get in and become upstanding members of society.

When people sneak in without registering or having background checks, they become criminals who are a drain on society. In case you need reminding, the very act of circumventing the process is breaking the law and therefore makes them a criminal.

Legal Immigration vs Illegal Immigration

No matter which side of the aisle you are on, chances are you want whats best for our country, our people and our economy… Although, I question that sometimes. lol

There seems to be some confusion between legal immigration vs illegal  immigration.

We can all agree that healthy, educated and productive migrants who enter the country legally are a welcome and beneficial addition to society.

Immigration laws, the border patrol, ICE (immigration and customs enforcement), border crossing points and border walls all help to ensure that people who are not qualified to enter the country cannot gain access.

Illegal immigrants are the ones who have already broken the law by simply crossing the border without following the proper procedure. The most common reason is the inability to qualify because of a criminal history. In some cases, they just don’t want to wait in line like everyone else, and since they don’t respect our laws, they break them.

If you think that more people should be allowed to migrate to the US, then we can have a discussion or debate about immigration reform, but our borders need to be kept secure to regulate who can and cannot come in.

When Obama Wanted Funding For Illegal Immigration Reform

Here is What I wrote when Obama sought funds for his border crisis:

When Obama sought $3.7 Billion to deal with the border crisis.  That was just a band-aid and will not stop the problem. In a few months when more illegal immigrants arrive, he will be asking for more money.  Of the funds he is requesting, less than 5% will go to reinforce the border, and I’m sure not is a secure way. Most of the funds are for Childcare and legal fees.

  • Only $295 Million is set aside for reintegration of immigrants to their home countries.
  • Only $29 Million for increasing border patrol.
  • Just $39 Million for Areal Surveillance.
  • Only $109 Million for Customs enforcement (which would include investigating smugglers of Drugs, weapons, and people.)

That leaves only $177 Million out of 3.7 Billion that would go toward reinforcing our borders.

There is even $615 Million built in for wildlife suppression…  whatever that is.

President Obama feels that it will cost at least $60,000 per child to return the children to their homes.  I agree that it will require some money, but we could send every one of them back home first class for $3,000 each.  We cannot keep spending money we don’t have.  I believe the government has plenty of revenue to cover every essential expense, social security, VA, health care and welfare, if we would just stop sending money to other countries getting involved in conflicts we don’t belong in and even funding terrorist organizations like the Muslim Brotherhood, but that is a topic for another political blog post.

I feel that we could effectively send all of the illegal immigrants home for $480 Million (including hearings, child care, chaperones, and all travel expenses) and we should use $500 Million to seal our borders completely.  I would be asking for $1 Billion which I would be more than willing to cut from some other foreign aid policy.

The reason for rehashing this old political news is simply to illustrate how democrats foolishly spend their budget.  When they ask for $3.7 Billion for border security, this is how they waste it.

More recently Donald Trump asked for $5.7 Billion for a border wall.  At least we know it will actually be spent on a border wall.  More on that in another post…
